About Nokia Fiber

Nokia’s Multi-PON solution allows you to mix GPON, XGS-PON, and 25G PON solutions on the same hardware. Start with Gigabit GPON and know that you can easily boost network capacity by a factor of 4 (XGS-PON) or even 10 (25G PON). With Nokia’s future-proof platform you can capitalize on opportunities whenever and wherever you’re ready while protecting your network investment for decades to come.

Fiber broadband in a nutshell

In a PON access network there are two end-points with active (powered) electronic transmission equipment, connected by passive (non-powered) equipment known as outside fiber plant. At the subscriber premises, there is an Optical Network Termination (ONT) device that terminates fiber and connects home devices (TV, PCs etc). The second end point is Optical Line Termination (OLT), typically located in telecom central office. The role of OLT is to aggregate connections of multiple users and connect them to the core network. The biggest start-up cost is deploying the outside plant, followed by installing and connecting the ONTs.

PON’s Next Success is 25G PON

25G passive optical network (PON) deployments are likely to begin in 2022 based on interviews with operators across the world. The basic catalyst for higher-speed PON is bandwidth demand, with momentum for 25G PON increasing as operators reuse their FTTP networks for higher-revenue customers and applications. These customers and applications include high-end gamers, enterprises, and 5G small cell transport, known as xHaul. PON has proven its success as the widely deployed fiber access infrastructure, supporting more than 680 million homes today. The PON ecosystem has a well-developed upgrade path, with 10G PON in deployment now, over the same optical distribution network (ODN) as earlier generations of PON technologies. 25G PON provides operators with an upgrade path to higher-bandwidth services, along with support for network slicing.

Near-Term 25G PON Use Cases

The standard for 25G PON is being developed through a multi-source agreement (MSA) and ecosystem that comprises over 40 partners from around the world. As service providers around the world are considering or implementing XGS-PON to allow them to deliver multi-gigabit service plans, the need for 25G might seem a long time in the future. This report examines the near-term use cases for 25G technology.

BABA

Buy America, Build America

Aerial view of green agricultural fields and rural landscape under a clear sky.

Most of the federal funding earmarked for the rural broadband initiative is subject to the Build America, Buy America Act. BABA is a federal requirement that applies to all programs that are part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) including BEAD. Buy America has 2 criteria:

Criteria #1: Equipment must be manufactured in the United States.

Criteria #2: 55% of the total cost of components must be US sourced.

Nokia’s commitment to rural America

In response to the stringent Build America Buy America Act regulations, Nokia has taken significant steps towards compliance. Nokia has committed to onshoring the manufacturing of several fiber broadband products within the United States. These products have been carefully selected for their performance, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility, making them ideal choices for potential recipients of the BEAD program. The products that fall under this manufacturing plan include:

  • Optical Line Termination (OLT) card for a modular Access Node
  • A small form factor OLT
  • OLT optical modules
  • “Outdoor-hardened” Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
